Vietnam MBBS Transcript and Grading: What to Verify
Direct answer: A Vietnam MBBS or Doctor of Medicine transcript is an official academic record, but its format, grading scale, credit notation, issue process and treatment of repeated courses depend on the university. Indian students should ask the intended university for its current academic regulations, sample transcript or transcript guidance, grading scale and document-issue procedure before enrolment.
A transcript can matter during transfer requests, scholarships, further study, visa or employment documentation, and when a graduate must explain the completed programme to another authority. It is not, by itself, proof that a foreign medical degree satisfies Indian licensing rules. The course, duration, theory, practical and clinical training pathway and the rules applicable when the student graduates must be assessed separately.
What does a medical transcript usually record?
A transcript normally records the student’s identity, subjects, credits or contact requirements, grades and academic status. The exact fields vary, so ask the registrar what will appear on the final and interim records.
| Record item | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Programme and degree | Shows what qualification the record belongs to | Exact programme name, campus and degree-awarding institution |
| Course title and code | Helps another institution understand the study completed | Whether medical subjects, practicals and clinical components are separately identified |
| Credits or workload | Supports academic comparison | Credit definition and whether practical/clinical work is represented |
| Grade and scale | Prevents incorrect GPA conversion | Grade letters, marks, pass thresholds and official scale |
| Term and attempt | Shows when and how a course was completed | Whether repeats, re-exams or withdrawals appear |
| Academic standing | May affect progression or future applications | How probation, leave, suspension or completion is recorded |
| Authentication | Confirms that the document is official | Registrar signature, seal, digital verification or issuing process |
How are grades and GPA calculated?
Do not convert a Vietnamese grade into an Indian percentage or another GPA without the issuing university’s scale. A university may use letter grades, numerical marks, grade points, credits or a combination. Even when two institutions use a 4.0-style GPA, their grade bands and calculation rules may differ.
VinUniversity’s current Academic Regulations for Full-Time Undergraduate Programs state that the university operates an academic credit system and set out rules for assessment, grading and graduation. They also state that, where a student repeats a course to improve a cumulative GPA, only one repeat attempt is permitted after the first attempt and the most recent grade is calculated into the GPA while the original grade does not count toward GPA. This is a VinUniversity rule, not a universal rule for every Vietnam medical programme.
Before relying on a GPA, request the current grading table and ask whether the transcript displays both attempts, the latest attempt only, a withdrawal code, or a separate note. Ask whether clinical clerkships, internships, OSCEs and practical subjects are graded in the same way as classroom subjects.
What should Indian students check about credits?
Ask what one credit represents and how practical or clinical learning is counted. A credit number is useful only when its definition is clear. Two programmes can show similar totals while using different teaching hours, practical requirements or clinical arrangements.
- Request the official curriculum or programme specification for your cohort.
- Ask whether anatomy, laboratory, skills, clerkship and internship components appear as separate courses.
- Confirm prerequisites and whether passing one subject is required before entering the next clinical block.
- Ask how transfer credits are evaluated and whether an official transcript, syllabus and course-hours statement are required.
- Keep course syllabi, logbooks and completion letters in addition to the final transcript.
- Ask whether the university issues an English-language record directly or requires translation.
How do retakes, re-exams and withdrawals appear?
Get the answer in writing before you assume that a retake will disappear from the record. Academic regulations may distinguish between a failed course, a re-examination, repeating a course for grade improvement, withdrawal and an approved leave of absence. Those events can affect progression, fees, maximum study duration and the information shown on an academic record.
VinUniversity’s published regulations explain that required failed courses must be retaken or replaced by an approved equivalent where applicable, and that a student may repeat a passed course for GPA improvement subject to the stated limit. Its leave rules separately describe temporary leave, return applications and the risk of an inactive student record if an approved leave ends without an extension. Students at other universities must obtain the equivalent rule from their own registrar.
Parents should ask: Will a failed attempt be printed? Is a re-exam different from a course retake? Does a leave of absence preserve completed credits? Can a student graduate if a prerequisite or clinical requirement remains incomplete? Are retake and transcript fees published?
Can a transcript prove NMC eligibility in India?
No. A transcript is evidence of academic study, not an NMC approval or licensing guarantee. The NMC publishes the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021 and related FAQs and notices. Those materials address conditions applicable to foreign medical graduates, but an individual student must assess the entire programme and the rules applicable at the relevant time.
Check the exact degree-awarding school in WDOMS as a directory exercise, remembering that WDOMS itself says a listing does not denote recognition, accreditation or endorsement. Also verify the foreign programme’s duration, in-person theory and clinical training, internship arrangements, language requirements and graduation documents. The site’s graduation-document checklist, internship guide and NMC validity explainer cover related questions.
Transcript verification checklist before enrolment
Ask the university’s official admissions or registrar office for written answers to these questions:
- What is the exact name of the degree and awarding institution?
- What grading scale and GPA method apply to the international medical programme?
- Are course credits, practicals, clinical clerkships and internship recorded separately?
- How are failed courses, re-exams, retakes and grade improvement shown?
- How long does the registrar take to issue a transcript after completion?
- Can the university issue an English transcript and a completion or medium-of-instruction letter?
- What verification, notarisation, translation or legalisation may another authority request?
- Are transcript, duplicate, courier or verification fees published?
Official-channel and fraud warning
No consultancy can alter a university transcript, erase a failed subject, guarantee an NMC outcome or promise a licensing result. Confirm academic records, fee rules and document procedures through the university’s official domain and registrar. Do not pay a person for a “clean transcript”, “backdated certificate” or guaranteed correction. Never share OTPs or transfer money to an unverified personal account. FAQs
Is a Vietnam MBBS transcript the same as an Indian MBBS marksheet?
No. The issuing university decides the format, terminology, grading scale and record fields. Ask for its official transcript guidance.
Should I convert GPA into a percentage?
Only when the receiving institution gives a conversion method or the university issues an official conversion. Do not invent a conversion from a generic online table.
Will failed subjects always appear?
Not necessarily in the same way. Some records show attempts, grades or codes; the university’s current academic regulations control the answer.
Does a transcript prove that the degree is valid in India?
No. It documents study. Indian licensing eligibility depends on the applicable NMC rules and the full programme pathway.
Can I request a transcript before graduation?
Many universities issue interim or unofficial records, but availability, authentication and permitted use vary. Ask the registrar.
What should I retain besides the transcript?
Keep the degree certificate, completion letter, syllabi, clinical logbooks, internship evidence, identity records and any official verification correspondence.

Transcript formats, grading, credit definitions, document fees and Indian licensing requirements can change; obtain current written confirmation from the intended university and applicable regulator.
