Vietnam MBBS Internship: What Indian Students Must Verify
Direct answer: Indian students should verify the Vietnam MBBS internship as a separate, documented phase of the medical programme. Clinical postings during the degree are not automatically the same as the post-course internship or clerkship. What does the NMC currently require students to examine?
The NMC materials require more than a foreign medical degree title. Its Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations page and public advisories discuss a minimum course duration, English-medium instruction, curriculum, clinical training, internship arrangements and the applicable Indian examination or registration pathway. A March 2026 public notice also explains the treatment of certain older admissions and the separate Indian internship requirement for students covered by the 2021 framework.
The current NMC FAQ materials state that FMGs seeking Indian internship must have, among other conditions, a minimum 54-month foreign medical course, a minimum 12-month internship in the same foreign medical institution, English as the medium of instruction, specified subjects, the required foreign registration status and a passed screening or exit test as applicable. What should an internship plan contain?
A usable plan identifies the institution, time period and evidence, not only the word “internship.” Request these details:
- the exact foreign university or medical institution conducting the internship;
- the start and end dates and total duration;
- the rotation list, such as medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, emergency care and community medicine where applicable;
- the teaching hospital or approved facilities;
- the named supervising authority and attendance method;
- the language used with patients and in clinical records;
- the assessment, logbook and completion-certificate format;
- the local registration or permission needed for the intern; and
- the process for missed rotations, illness, leave or a delayed graduation.
If a university says “hospital exposure from Year 1,” ask when the formal internship begins. Early observation and supervised clinical training can be valuable, but they do not answer the internship question by themselves.
What do official university pages show?
Official programme pages can clarify structure, but they must be read precisely. Dai Nam University’s international medical materials describe a six-year programme for international students, with early theory and later clinical practice in Hanoi. Its Faculty of Medicine page separately refers to practical training and a graduation clinical-practice or internship module. Those pages are useful starting evidence, but an applicant should still request the intake-specific schedule and documents.
Dong A University’s official 2026 international Doctor of Medicine admission notice states a six-year English-delivered General Medicine programme and a degree of Doctor of Medicine. It describes admission and enrolment requirements, but an admission notice alone does not establish every internship or future Indian-registration condition. The same verification standard applies to each of the site’s partner universities.

Why does language matter during internship?
English-medium lectures do not remove the need to plan for Vietnamese clinical communication. Patients, nurses, hospital forms and local supervisors may use Vietnamese. Ask how the programme supports history taking, consent, case presentation, records, handover and safety when the student is not yet fluent.

Records to preserve from Year 1
Students should build a secure evidence file throughout the course. Keep admission letters, fee receipts, the approved curriculum, timetables, attendance reports, examination results, clinical logbooks, rotation letters, hospital postings, internship certificates, passport pages and any university correspondence about changes.
Save both the original and a secure digital copy. Ask who signs the internship certificate, whether the certificate identifies the same foreign medical institution, and how corrections are handled. If clinical training is moved to another country or facility, obtain a written explanation and check the impact before agreeing.
