Connectivity is not an academic guarantee. It is a practical tool that should be set up without exposing passport details, banking credentials or private university documents. Students should also keep a backup route: campus Wi-Fi, a trusted contact’s number and the Indian SIM for essential OTPs.

Expect an identity-verification step and use your own passport details. VNPT’s published guidance for international travel SIMs says foreign customers may need a passport and visa or related travel documents. Vietnam’s ministry guidance also states that prepaid subscribers must register personal information directly through eligible agencies and that incorrectly registered or unregistered activated SIMs may be terminated.
Current procedures can differ by operator, product, nationality, stay status and channel. Ask the provider:
- Which original identity document is accepted for an Indian passport holder?
- Is the SIM registered in the student’s own name and passport number?
- Can the student receive a receipt or registration confirmation?

Do not permit a seller to register the number under a hostel employee, guide, friend or agent. If the seller says “all tourists use this pre-activated SIM”, choose another channel.
Should students use a physical SIM or eSIM?
Use the format that preserves reliable access to both numbers and can be supported locally. A physical SIM is easy to move between compatible phones, but it can be lost or damaged. If an Indian bank allows a verified alternate number, make that change only through the bank’s official process. Use a screen lock, device encryption and a separate recovery email. How much data should an MBBS student buy?
Choose by use pattern, not by an unverified “unlimited” label. A student using campus Wi-Fi may need less mobile data than a student commuting to hospital teaching sites or living in a private room without stable broadband. Check:
- high-speed data allowance and what happens after it is used;
- hotspot or tethering restrictions;
- validity period and automatic renewal;
- top-up methods accepted by foreign customers;

Do not rely on a travel eSIM’s marketing map as proof of coverage at a specific medical campus. Ask the university or current student-support team which networks work reliably at the intended accommodation and clinical sites, then verify the plan directly with the operator.
What is the safest purchase and top-up process?
Buy through an authorised operator store or official digital channel that identifies the product, price and registration conditions. Take a photo of the receipt without exposing your passport number online. Confirm the number, plan expiry and registered name before leaving the shop.
For top-ups, use the operator’s official app, website, store or a reputable payment channel. Avoid links sent by unknown agents, QR codes pasted over a public kiosk, and “student packages” that have no operator name or terms. If a payment fails, contact the operator instead of paying a second personal account.
