Vietnam MBBS Student Health Insurance: What Indians Must Check
Direct answer: Indian students should not assume that an MBBS admission package automatically provides complete health insurance. The university may collect a health-insurance charge, nominate a provider, accept an approved alternative policy or require proof of cover. The correct arrangement depends on the institution, programme, insurer, immigration file and current policy. Ask for the written coverage schedule before travelling and keep a separate emergency plan.
Health insurance is different from a routine medical check-up, travel insurance, student support or a university clinic. A campus clinic may provide basic advice while a policy decides whether hospital treatment, medicines, tests, evacuation or reimbursement is covered. Parents should compare the policy wording, not just the name of the insurer or the amount printed on a fee sheet.
What should a student policy cover?
Start with the situations the student is most likely to face. Ask whether the policy includes:
| Area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Routine outpatient care | Are consultations, prescribed medicines and diagnostic tests covered, and at which clinics? |
| Hospitalisation | What is the annual limit, room limit, deductible and pre-authorisation process? |
| Accidents | Are injuries on campus, during travel or during practical training treated differently? |
| Emergency care | Which hotline and hospitals should the student use, and what must be reported immediately? |
| Pre-existing conditions | Are they excluded, covered after a waiting period or subject to medical disclosure? |
| Dental and optical care | Are these excluded or limited to a separate annual amount? |
| Repatriation or evacuation | Is emergency transport included, and who authorises it? |
Do not interpret a high annual limit as full protection. Sub-limits, exclusions, networks, co-payments, claim deadlines and pre-authorisation can materially change what the family pays.
Does the university arrange insurance?
Some universities arrange or collect a student policy, but the terms are institution-specific. VinUniversity's current international-student financial materials, for example, describe a health-insurance charge for international students and explain that students may submit proof of valid independent cover before the university's fee notification, subject to the stated process. Its student-facing materials also identify an on-campus clinic and claims guidance.
This example does not establish the rule for Aieraa's seven partner universities. Ask the intended university: Is insurance compulsory? Who is the provider? Is the fee collected by the university or paid directly to the insurer? Can a family use an Indian or international policy? What proof and renewal dates are accepted? Get the answer from the official international office or fee document.
What documents should an Indian student carry?
Carry a bilingual or clearly readable emergency file. Keep the policy certificate, member number, insurer hotline, exclusions, claim form, passport copy, visa or residence details, emergency contact and university contact in both secure digital storage and an offline copy. If the policy is not in English, request a usable explanation of the main benefits and exclusions.
Disclose medical information accurately when the proposal or policy asks for it. Do not hide a pre-existing condition because someone says it will make approval faster. An incorrect declaration can affect a later claim. Parents should also give the student a list of regular medicines using generic names, prescriptions and the treating doctor's contact details.
How does a claim normally work?
Follow the insurer's process before treatment whenever the situation is not an emergency. Confirm whether the hospital is in-network, whether a guarantee of payment is needed and whether pre-authorisation is required. Save consultation notes, prescriptions, invoices, receipts, test reports and discharge summaries. Photograph documents only after checking that personal data is stored securely.
In an emergency, obtain urgent care first and contact the insurer or university as soon as reasonably possible. The policy may require notice within a defined period. A university support team can help a student understand whom to call, but it cannot promise that an insurer will approve a claim.
What medical support should students ask about before arrival?
Ask for the local support map, not only the insurance card. Before flying, request:
- the nearest emergency department and how to reach it;
- the university clinic's hours, phone number and language support;
- the insurer's 24-hour assistance number, if any;
- the process for arranging a translator or payment guarantee;
- the procedure for storing and renewing regular medicines;
- the contact responsible for a hospital admission; and
- the way the hostel or university reports an emergency to the family.
Students should also review the site's safety guide for Indian parents, hostel checklist and medical-fitness checklist. These pages provide planning context, but none replaces the current insurance wording.
Does Indian health insurance work automatically in Vietnam?
No: cross-border cover must be confirmed in writing. An Indian health policy may cover overseas treatment only if Vietnam is included, the trip or study duration is eligible, the provider accepts the claim route and the exclusions allow the treatment. A normal domestic policy is not automatically an international student policy.
Ask the Indian insurer whether direct billing is available or whether the student must pay first and claim reimbursement. Confirm currency, claim documents, time limits, emergency-assistance numbers and whether the policy requires a referral or pre-authorisation. Keep a Vietnamese or international backup arrangement if the university requires one.
How should parents compare price and value?
Compare the total risk-bearing cost, not the premium alone. A cheaper plan may have a small hospital limit, a high deductible, narrow network, no outpatient cover or strict exclusions. A more expensive plan may still be unsuitable if the student cannot access its approved hospitals near campus.
Use a simple checklist: annual premium, coverage period, network hospitals, outpatient limit, hospital limit, deductible, co-pay, pre-existing conditions, medicines, mental-health support, dental/optical exclusions, emergency hotline, claim language, reimbursement time and renewal rule. Ask what happens if the student changes university, extends the visa, takes leave or returns to India between semesters.
Official-channel and fraud warning
No consultancy can guarantee insurance approval, cashless treatment, claim settlement, hospital admission or reimbursement. Buy or confirm cover through the university, insurer or licensed channel named in official documents. Verify the beneficiary before paying, request a policy certificate and do not share OTPs, card PINs, banking passwords or an original passport with an unverified intermediary. FAQs
Is health insurance compulsory for every Indian MBBS student in Vietnam?
Do not assume a universal rule. The university, programme and current Vietnamese requirements may determine whether cover is collected, required or accepted through an alternative policy.
Can I use my Indian health-insurance policy?
Only if the insurer confirms overseas study cover, eligible duration, claim method and treatment conditions in writing. Domestic-only cover is not enough.
Does a university clinic replace health insurance?
No. A clinic may provide primary support or guidance, while insurance governs covered treatment, networks, exclusions and reimbursement.
What if the student needs hospital treatment urgently?
Seek urgent care first, then follow the policy's emergency-notification procedure and contact the university support team. Keep every medical and payment record.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
Not automatically. Read the proposal and policy wording, disclose information accurately and ask the insurer for a written decision before travel.
Can the student buy insurance after reaching Vietnam?
Possibly, but university enrolment or immigration processes may require proof by a particular date. Confirm the timing before relying on post-arrival purchase.

Insurance requirements, providers, premiums, networks, exclusions, claim deadlines and health regulations can change. Obtain the intended university's current policy schedule and the insurer's full wording before travel or payment.
