Vietnam MBBS Withdrawal and Deferral: What to Check
Direct answer: Leave of absence, course withdrawal, admission deferral and permanent withdrawal are different actions. Before changing a Vietnam MBBS or Doctor of Medicine plan, obtain the current university procedure in writing and ask how it affects the academic record, tuition, hostel, insurance, visa or residence status, and return date.
A message saying “you can pause anytime” is not a policy. A student may need a formal application, supporting documents, approval from more than one office and a deadline before the semester or official withdrawal date. Refunds are often governed by a separate financial regulation. The safest decision is documented and made directly with the university.
What is the difference?
Leave normally pauses study temporarily; deferral moves an admission or start date; course withdrawal removes a registered course; programme withdrawal ends enrolment. Universities use different labels, so ask the registrar to define the action before signing.

What do official university examples show?
Read the policy for the exact university and cohort, not a generic agent summary. VinUniversity’s Student Code says students may request academic leave, deferment, acceleration, extension or transfer under university rules. Its student resources list forms for leave of absence, withdrawal and return after leave. This establishes a VinUniversity process; it does not prove that every Vietnamese medical programme uses the same form or deadline.
VinUniversity’s Spring 2026 registrar notice says a student who formally withdraws from a registered course receives a “W – Withdrawn” grade on the transcript, and later re-enrolment is treated as repeat enrolment with tuition payable again under the regulations. Ask whether the proposed action affects one course, a semester or the whole programme.
How do tuition and refunds interact?
Do not assume leaving creates an automatic refund. VinUniversity’s current financial regulation says tuition and other payments are generally non-deferrable and non-refundable except where the regulation permits it and the university approves a written request. It also says students filing for leave, withdrawing or dropping out must submit an application at least 30 days before the official withdrawal date.
This is a university-specific example. Request an itemised answer covering tuition, registration, hostel, meals, insurance, visa or residence support, airport arrangements, scholarships, discounts, exchange-rate treatment and outstanding balances. Ask whether the refund clock starts from the student’s email, university approval or official withdrawal date.
What should an Indian student check before leave?
Confirm academic and immigration consequences together. Ask the registrar and international office:
- What reason and evidence are accepted, and who approves?
- Does the student remain enrolled and retain portal, library, hostel or clinic access?
- Which courses, attendance records, grades or progression requirements are affected?
- Can the student return to the same cohort?
- Will the curriculum, fees or clinical sequence change?
- What happens to the visa, residence card, temporary residence and insurance?
- What written confirmation is issued?
A study interruption may change the basis for immigration permission. The university’s international office and competent Vietnamese immigration authority must answer that question. Do not remain in Vietnam or re-enter on an old visa message.
What records should parents keep?
Keep a complete decision file. Save the application, supporting documents, fee ledger, approval, transcript, attendance record, hostel handover, insurance status, passport and visa correspondence, and written return conditions. Use the official university email domain.
A withdrawal is not automatically a licensing problem, but it can affect course continuity, clinical sequence, internship timing and the documents needed to explain the full medical education pathway. NMC rules and notices must be checked for the student’s admission cohort; a leave policy cannot establish Indian licensing eligibility.

Questions to ask before booking travel
Do not book a return flight or move out of the hostel until the written decision is clear. Ask whether the student must complete an exit interview, return an identity card, clear library or finance holds, collect the transcript, or obtain a new invitation or residence document. If the student is outside Vietnam, ask whether remote submission is accepted and whether an authorised representative may collect documents.
Also ask what happens to course materials, examination attempts, clinical logbooks and student email access during the interruption. A later return may require orientation, health screening, language preparation or a new clinical placement. These details are not administrative trivia: they can change the time and cost of completing the degree.
