Can Family Join an Indian MBBS Student in Vietnam?

Can Family Join an Indian MBBS Student in Vietnam?

Direct answer: Do not assume that a student visa automatically gives a spouse, child or parent the right to live in Vietnam. Each relative needs a lawful immigration basis of their own. The route can depend on the relative’s relationship, age, passport, intended length of stay, sponsor, accommodation and the student’s actual visa or temporary-residence status.

For most Indian families, the practical question is not simply “Can my family come?” It is “Which person is travelling, for what purpose, for how long, and who will lawfully invite, sponsor or accommodate them?” Confirm the answer with the Vietnam Immigration Department, the relevant Vietnamese mission and the university’s international-student office before buying tickets or paying for accommodation.

Is a student visa a family or dependent visa?

Usually, no. A visa granted for the student’s study purpose does not by itself create a blanket dependent entitlement for relatives. The student and each accompanying family member are separate travellers with separate passports, applications and permitted activities.

Vietnam’s National Portal on Immigration explains that a foreigner with a temporary residence card may be able to sponsor a spouse or child under 18 to live together during the validity of that card, when the inviting or guaranteeing organisation agrees. That is a specific immigration mechanism, not proof that every new MBBS student has a temporary residence card or that every relative qualifies automatically.

Parents should be assessed separately. A parent visiting to help a student settle is not the same as a spouse or child seeking to live with the student for the course. The portal’s visitor-sponsorship guidance also distinguishes relatives and sponsors, so a family should not use a student’s acceptance letter as if it were the parent’s own long-stay permission.

What should a spouse or child verify?

Start by asking whether the intended stay is a visit or residence and whether the student has the status needed for the proposed sponsorship route. Request written answers to these questions:

QuestionWhy it matters
Is the relative visiting or living in Vietnam? The purpose and permitted stay may lead to different visa or residence routes.
Is the relative a spouse or child under 18?Relationship categories and age thresholds can affect eligibility.
Does the student hold a temporary residence card?A student visa, approval letter and residence card are not interchangeable.
Who is the inviting or guaranteeing party? The university, organisation, resident or another eligible sponsor may have different duties.
Where will the family stay?Accommodation must accept the stay and complete any required residence declaration.
Can the relative study or work?Visitor or family-related permission does not automatically authorise either activity.

Keep marriage or birth records, passports, translations and evidence of the student’s status ready only in the format the authority requests. Do not order legalisation or translations until the receiving office confirms the current document route.

What about parents?

A parent’s short visit should be planned as a separate visitor case. The family should confirm the current visa option, permitted stay, entry point, passport validity, accommodation and temporary-residence reporting. A parent may need an e-visa or another appropriate route depending on the purpose and current rules. A parent should not work, study or remain beyond the permitted period on the assumption that the student is enrolled.

The National Portal on Immigration says foreign visitors can apply for an e-visa under the stated conditions and that an e-visa is valid for a limited period; the current portal should be checked because dates, fees, domains and eligibility can change. If a relative needs a longer or different status, ask the competent immigration office or a qualified Vietnamese immigration adviser rather than extending a visitor plan informally.

How should accommodation and residence be handled?

Ask the accommodation provider before arrival whether it accepts family members and who will declare temporary residence. Staying in a hostel, rented apartment, hotel or homestay can involve different check-in documents and reporting processes. The student’s university may help with its own student residence, but it cannot automatically authorise a private landlord or extend a relative’s immigration permission.

Keep copies of the passport bio page, visa or residence document, entry stamp, address, booking, contact person and confirmation of any residence declaration. If the relative changes address, ask whether a fresh declaration is required. Never leave the only passport with a broker or landlord without a documented official reason and receipt.

Family decision checklist before payment

  1. Define the traveller: student, spouse, child or parent.
  2. Define the purpose: visit, accompanying stay, study or work.
  3. Confirm the student’s actual visa and temporary-residence status.
  4. Ask the university and Immigration Department for the current route in writing.
  5. Check passport validity, relationship evidence, translations and legalisation only as instructed.
  6. Confirm accommodation acceptance and temporary-residence reporting.
  7. Check health insurance, emergency contacts and return-ticket or funds requirements.
  8. Record visa expiry, extension responsibility and the consequences of overstaying.

FAQs

Can my spouse automatically stay with me in Vietnam?

No. A spouse needs a lawful immigration route of their own. Confirm the student’s status, sponsor and current family-related requirements.

Can my child live with me during MBBS?

Possibly in some circumstances, but eligibility, age, sponsorship and residence conditions must be confirmed with Immigration. A student visa alone is not enough.

Can my parents stay for the full six-year course?

Do not assume that a visitor route permits continuous residence. Plan each parent’s lawful stay separately and obtain current official advice for any longer arrangement.

Can a family member work in Vietnam?

Not automatically. Work authorisation and visa conditions are separate questions and must be checked before employment.

Can my family stay in the student hostel?

Only if the accommodation provider’s written rules permit it and the required residence reporting can be completed.

Can Aieraa arrange a dependent visa?

Aieraa can help families organise questions and follow the university support flow, but immigration authorities decide visa and residence matters.
