Can Parents Stay with Students in Vietnam? Visa Checklist
Direct answer: A parent does not automatically receive the student’s study status or the right to remain in Vietnam simply because their son or daughter has a Vietnamese student visa. The student and parent normally need to qualify for their own entry and temporary-residence arrangements, with the purpose, duration and documents checked separately. A parent may visit under a suitable visitor arrangement, but long-term residence alongside an MBBS student is not something an admission agent can promise.
This distinction matters when families plan a first visit, airport support, a longer settling-in period or repeated stays. What does the Vietnam student visa cover?
The student route is tied to study. The official Vietnam e-visa portal says that a foreigner entering for study must have an acceptance document from a Vietnamese school or educational institution. Vietnam National University’s official visa guidance identifies the DH-coded visa as the study-purpose visa for international students and says it cannot simply be used for another purpose. The student’s admission letter, passport, visa or temporary residence document should therefore describe the student’s own educational purpose.
A parent travelling to accompany a student is a different applicant. The parent should not use the student’s acceptance letter as if it were their own study invitation, and should not assume that the student’s visa grants a dependent entitlement.
Can a parent apply for the same student visa?
Usually, no: a parent is not a student in the programme. The Vietnamese law on foreigners’ entry, exit, transit and residence uses different visa symbols and conditions for different purposes. The official law and immigration portal should be checked for the current route. A parent may need a visitor or other appropriate visa, depending on the planned stay and the inviting or guaranteeing party.
Do not confuse a family-related residence category with a general parent-of-student category. The law’s family provisions are fact-specific and may concern relatives of Vietnamese citizens or certain foreign visa holders. They do not create a blanket entitlement for every parent of an international MBBS student.
Short visit or longer stay: plan differently
A short arrival visit is simpler to plan than a semester-long stay. Use this checklist before booking flights:

What documents should the student and parent keep?
Prepare two coordinated but separate document folders. The student folder may include passport, university acceptance letter, fee receipt, visa or immigration approval, accommodation address, insurance information and emergency contacts. The parent folder may include passport, approved visa or e-visa, return or onward travel evidence where requested, accommodation details, travel insurance, proof of relationship if relevant and copies of the student’s admission details for context.
Documents do not guarantee entry. Immigration officers can apply current rules at the time of application and entry. Check the official portal immediately before submission, use the exact passport spelling and keep the approved document accessible offline.
Accommodation and temporary-residence questions
Visa permission and hostel permission are separate. Ask the hostel or landlord whether parents may stay, for how many nights, at what cost and how temporary residence is reported. A student hostel may be restricted to enrolled students or may have its own visitor rules. Do not move a parent into university accommodation based only on a verbal assurance.
Ask the university’s international office who handles student residence reporting, who should be contacted if a parent’s stay changes, and whether the student must notify the institution. Keep receipts and written confirmations. These steps help families avoid an avoidable mismatch between the immigration record and the actual accommodation.
