Vietnam MBBS Attendance Rules: What Indian Students Must Confirm
Direct answer: There is no single attendance percentage that can safely be promised to every Indian student studying MBBS in Vietnam. The university, programme, year, course syllabus and clinical placement determine what is compulsory, how absences are approved, and whether missed practical work can be made up. Ask for the current written academic regulations and course syllabi before paying a deposit.
Attendance is more than sitting in a lecture. Medical programmes may record workshops, small-group learning, laboratories, simulation, clinical placements, examinations and professional activities separately. A student who attends lectures but misses laboratory or clinical sessions may still face academic or progression problems.
Why should parents check attendance before admission?
Attendance rules affect timetable, travel, leave, progression and clinical readiness. Families sometimes plan around long trips home, festivals, coaching, part-time work or a flexible online schedule. That plan may not fit a medical curriculum with compulsory practical and clinical activities.
| Question | What to obtain in writing |
|---|---|
| Which sessions are mandatory? | Separate rules for lectures, tutorials, labs, workshops, small groups and clinical placements. |
| What counts as an absence? | Late arrival, early departure, missing attendance registration and leaving a session midway. |
| How is leave approved? | Notice period, acceptable reasons, evidence and the approving authority. |
| Can missed work be recovered? | Make-up class, equivalent assignment, replacement rotation or no substitute. |
| What affects exam eligibility? | Attendance thresholds, completed practical work, course requirements and academic standing. |
What does one published medical-school policy show?
VinUniversity’s public MD attendance policy illustrates why the details must be read, not guessed. Its policy applies to Year 1, 2 and 3 students in the Medical Doctor programme. It says didactic sessions are not mandatory unless a course director formally requires them, while non-didactic sessions—including workshops, small groups, laboratory work and clinical placements—require 100% attendance. The policy allows up to 20% excused absences for non-didactic sessions, subject to approved reasons and an equitable assignment.
The same policy requires supporting information within three days after an application for an excused absence. Absences beyond the stated allowance need special consideration by the Board of Examiners. Attendance can be registered electronically or manually, but the policy says registration is not allowed after the session has concluded.
This is a current example from one university, not a rule for all seven Aieraa partner universities or every Vietnamese medical programme. It is useful because it shows the categories parents should ask about: session type, documentation, make-up work, attendance records and appeal.
How are lectures different from practical and clinical sessions?
Practical and clinical sessions normally need closer attendance control than ordinary lectures. A laboratory, simulation class or hospital rotation may have limited equipment, patient-safety requirements, group assignments and a defined learning outcome that cannot be recreated by watching a recording.
Ask the university whether the following are recorded independently:
- anatomy, physiology and other laboratory sessions;
- small-group case discussions and workshops;
- simulation and skills-lab sessions;
- clinical observations, rotations and community placements;
- internal assessments, practical examinations and viva sessions; and
- orientation, language or mandatory professional activities.
Also ask whether “attendance” means physical presence for the full session, a sign-in, a biometric record, a learning-platform entry or an instructor confirmation. A student should not assume that a friend can sign in for them or that a screenshot proves attendance.
What leave reasons may be accepted?
Leave is normally an approval process, not an automatic entitlement. The academic regulations may recognise serious illness, significant family circumstances, official university representation or other documented reasons, but the course instructor or authorised committee decides what is acceptable.
Before travelling, ask for the absence form, the contact person and the time limit for notifying the teaching team. For illness, the university may ask for a medical certificate from an accepted provider. For a family emergency, it may ask for supporting evidence. Keep copies of every submission and written response.
- Notify the instructor or international office as soon as the problem is known.
- State the dates, courses and sessions affected.
- Attach the required evidence without sending unnecessary personal data.
- Ask whether a make-up activity is required and by when.
- Confirm that the attendance record was corrected or the absence approved.
What happens if attendance is recorded incorrectly?
Raise the discrepancy quickly through the university’s formal review route. Check the student portal or attendance system after every flagged absence. If the student attended but the record is missing, keep evidence such as the instructor’s confirmation, approved sign-in record or submitted work.
VinUniversity’s published MD policy provides an appeal route to its Board of Examiners for attendance-recording disputes. Other universities may use a course coordinator, dean, registrar or academic committee. The important question is not whether an agent says “we will fix it”; it is whether the university publishes a process the student can use directly.
How do attendance and language connect in clinical years?
Clinical attendance and Vietnamese communication should be assessed together. VinUniversity’s undergraduate academic regulations say the College of Health Sciences may use Vietnamese or bilingual teaching in courses and clinical rotations, and that international students must demonstrate Vietnamese proficiency at B2 before entering the Medical Doctor programme in Year 4 for cohorts from 2025 onwards. The same document explains that teaching-hospital records, prescriptions and professional communication are in Vietnamese.
This does not establish the language threshold or attendance rule at another university. It does show why a student should ask when Vietnamese lessons begin, what level is required for clinical placement, whether language attendance is compulsory, and how a student who is struggling can obtain support.
Read the site’s English-medium verification guide, internship verification checklist and clinical-training guide together. Academic language and clinical communication are related but not identical questions.
What should Indian students ask before paying?
Request the documents for the exact programme and intake, not a generic brochure. Use this pre-payment checklist:
- current academic regulations and student handbook;
- course syllabi showing attendance and assessment conditions;
- separate clinical and laboratory attendance requirements;
- leave, illness and emergency-absence procedure;
- exam eligibility and progression consequences;
- attendance recording and appeal process;
- Vietnamese-language requirements for clinical years; and
- the contact details of the university’s international or academic office.
Save the version date of each document. Rules can change between admission and the start of a later academic year. If a representative gives a verbal assurance that conflicts with the university document, ask the university to confirm the assurance from an official email address.
Official-channel and fraud warning
No consultancy can guarantee attendance waivers, exam eligibility, leave approval, promotion, clinical placement or a pass result. Aieraa can help students organise questions for its partner universities, but the university’s academic authorities decide attendance and progression. Verify every rule, fee and payment instruction through the official university channel. For Aieraa’s official admissions and support flow, call +91 93441 41424 or use the official contact page.
FAQs
Is there one attendance percentage for MBBS in Vietnam?
No. Requirements vary by university, programme, year and course. Practical and clinical sessions may have stricter rules than lectures.
Can I miss classes for a family event in India?
Only if the university approves the absence under its current procedure. Ask in advance, provide required evidence and confirm whether make-up work is needed.
Are laboratory and clinical sessions compulsory?
They may be. VinUniversity’s public MD policy makes non-didactic sessions such as laboratory work and clinical placements mandatory, but another university’s rules must be checked separately.
What if the attendance app fails?
Report it promptly to the instructor or academic office and keep evidence. Do not wait until exam eligibility is reviewed.
Can an agent obtain attendance permission?
An agent cannot replace the university’s academic authority. The student should submit leave and appeals through the official process and keep the written decision.
Does English-medium teaching mean clinical attendance is optional?
No. Language of instruction and attendance are separate. Clinical placements, practical work and Vietnamese communication can have their own compulsory requirements.
Source and limitation note
Verified on 21 July 2026 against VinUniversity’s public Attendance Policy at Medical Doctor Program (POL-CHS-001-V2.0, issued 15 September 2025), VinUniversity Academic Regulations for Full-Time Undergraduate Programs (issued 30 October 2024), and the repository’s university and admissions data. These documents illustrate institution-specific rules and do not establish the policy of every Vietnamese medical university. Attendance, leave, language, assessment and progression rules can change; obtain the current programme documents and written confirmation from the intended university before enrolment.
