Can You Transfer to MBBS in Vietnam? Credit Checklist

Can You Transfer to MBBS in Vietnam? Credit Checklist

Direct answer: A student may be considered for transfer or credit recognition by a Vietnamese university, but there is no single automatic “MBBS transfer to Vietnam” rule. The receiving university decides whether prior study is comparable, which credits can be recognised and which year the student may enter. Indian licensing eligibility is a separate question and must be checked against the applicable National Medical Commission (NMC) rules.

This guide is for students who have already studied medicine, biomedical science or another healthcare course and are exploring Vietnam. It is not a promise that a partner university will accept transfer credits. Before paying, obtain a written decision from the university’s academic authority.

What does “transfer” mean in medical education?

Transfer can mean three different things: admission to a new university with no credit recognition, admission with selected subjects waived, or a formal move into a later year after academic evaluation. These outcomes are not interchangeable.

  • Fresh admission: you start the Vietnamese programme from Year 1, even if you studied elsewhere.
  • Subject exemption: the university accepts that a particular course is equivalent, but you may still remain in the same year.
  • Advanced standing: the university places you into a later stage after reviewing your transcript, syllabus, practical work and prerequisites.

Ask the university to state the outcome in writing. “Your credits may be adjusted” is not the same as a confirmed year of entry.

Do Vietnamese universities publish one national credit-transfer policy?

No; transfer decisions are institution-specific. The Ministry of Education and Training framework governs higher education, but the practical decision normally depends on the receiving university, programme office and academic committee. A public example is VinUniversity’s transfer-admission page: it says applicants are considered for admission first, then the relevant academic department evaluates credit transfer using detailed course syllabi and content. Its medical programme information also states language and proficiency requirements for the Doctor of Medicine route.

That example demonstrates the process, not a rule for every Vietnamese medical school. Aieraa’s admissions team can help Indian families request the correct university instruction, but only the university can approve the academic placement.

Which documents should you prepare?

The strongest transfer file lets an academic committee compare what you studied with the target curriculum. Prepare clear scans of:

  1. official transcript with subjects, marks, credits and dates;
  2. course syllabi showing learning outcomes, topics, teaching hours and assessments;
  3. practical and clinical-training records, including departments, dates and hours;
  4. attendance and examination records where available;
  5. proof of the previous institution’s recognition or accreditation;
  6. passport and identity documents;
  7. school-leaving records and any entrance or eligibility evidence requested for international admission; and
  8. an explanation of why you are changing institutions and what year you seek.

Ask whether documents must be translated, certified, authenticated or sent directly by the previous institution. Keep the original transcript safe. Do not edit a mark sheet, add missing credits or ask an intermediary to “format” an academic record.

How are medical credits compared?

Course titles alone are not enough. A committee may compare the learning outcomes, number of teaching hours, theory-practical balance, assessment method, grade, course sequence and prerequisite structure. Anatomy at one institution may not match anatomy at another if the hours, practical work or assessment differ.

QuestionWhy it matters
What is the official course content?Shows whether the subject actually covers the target learning outcomes.
How many theory and practical hours?Helps the university compare the training load.
Were clinical postings supervised?Clinical exposure is not the same as classroom credit.
Which prerequisites are missing?A later-year subject may depend on earlier modules.
Will the credit appear on the final transcript?You need a durable academic record for future applications.

What should Indian students check for future licensing?

Do not assume that credit transfer preserves NMC eligibility. The NMC’s Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations materials and its current advisories address duration, English medium, curriculum, clinical training and internship. A current NMC advisory warns students to check these requirements before taking admission and says deviations may affect eligibility for registration in India.

Before accepting advanced standing, ask the university for a complete written course map showing the institution awarding the degree, total duration, location of theory and clinical training, language of instruction, internship or clerkship arrangement and examination records. The NMC’s current FAQ materials distinguish clinical posting and training during the course from the separate internship phase. A shorter path is not automatically a safer path.

Also check the target school in the World Directory of Medical Schools and read the directory disclaimer. A WDOMS listing is a directory entry; it is not, by itself, NMC approval, accreditation or endorsement.

Questions to ask the university before paying

Request answers by official email or in the admission letter.

  1. Is transfer admission open for the exact Doctor of Medicine programme and intake?
  2. Who makes the credit decision: admissions, the faculty or an academic committee?
  3. What is the minimum grade, age of credit and accreditation requirement?
  4. Will practical and clinical hours be evaluated separately?
  5. Which year will the student enter if all proposed credits are accepted?
  6. What happens if some credits are rejected after arrival?
  7. Will the final transcript show transferred subjects and the full programme duration?
  8. Does the proposed route preserve the training records needed for the student’s intended licensing pathway?

Do not book travel or pay a large non-refundable amount until the university has identified the programme, year of entry, fee basis, refund terms and document conditions.

Official-channel and fraud warning

No consultancy can guarantee credit transfer, advanced year placement, admission, visa approval or a future medical licence. Verify the university email domain, admission letter, invoice and beneficiary account. Never share OTPs, card PINs, banking passwords or an original passport with an unverified intermediary. FAQs

Can I transfer from an Indian MBBS college to Vietnam?

You may request consideration, but acceptance and year placement depend on the receiving university’s academic review. Fresh admission may be the only available outcome.

Can I transfer after first year?

Possibly, if the university accepts the transcript, syllabus and academic record. Ask whether first-year subjects are equivalent and whether the intake has a published transfer route.

Will I automatically enter second year?

No. A later-year placement requires a written academic decision. Do not rely on a verbal assurance from an agent.

Are clinical postings transferable?

They may be reviewed separately from theory subjects. The receiving university may require evidence of supervised hours, departments, assessments and patient-facing training.

Does transfer reduce the course duration for India licensing?

It should not be assumed. Check the complete course and internship record against the NMC rules applicable to you.

Is WDOMS listing enough to approve a transfer?

No. WDOMS helps identify a medical school, but its listing does not itself establish recognition or NMC eligibility. The university must approve the academic transfer.

Source and limitation note

Verified on 18 July 2026 against the NMC rules-and-regulations page, the NMC FMG advisory and current FMGL FAQ materials, WDOMS’s official search disclaimer, VinUniversity’s official transfer-admission and transfer-credit pages, and the repository’s university and admissions data. Transfer policy, language requirements, credit rules, fees, clinical arrangements and licensing regulations can change. Obtain a current written decision from the receiving university before applying or paying.
